In 1943 a engineer at heath aircraft brought a large amount of military surplus electronic parts. The new Heathkit electronic company was being planed. He started with an oscilloscope, while it was being developed and tested he started  developing a few small simple kits and they started marketing them along with parts in January of 1947. By October 1949 they were were buying most of their parts direct from manufactures. There was no September flyer and the next flyer described why along with parts increases. A flyer describing this can be downloaded here 3 meg pdf.
